The Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist for a Flawless Project Handover

PASS 1 — ROUGH / PRE-CLEAN (after construction, before final finishes)

• Remove large debris, packaging, and scrap material from all rooms
• Clear protective film and tape from floors, windows, and fixtures (where safe)
• Dry-dust all surfaces to remove heavy construction dust
• Vacuum floors and ledges before wet cleaning begins
• Sweep/clear garage, loading, and exterior entry areas

PASS 2 — FINAL CLEAN (room by room)

FLOORS

• Vacuum carpets and edges thoroughly; treat any stains from trades
• Sweep and mop hard floors; remove paint splatter and adhesive residue
• Detail baseboards, corners, and thresholds

WALLS, CEILINGS & TRIM

• Dust ceilings, crown molding, and ceiling fans/light fixtures
• Remove drywall dust, cobwebs, and debris from corners
• Wipe down walls, doors, and frames; remove scuffs and fingerprints
• Clean switch plates, outlets, and door hardware

WINDOWS

• Remove paint and sticker residue from glass and frames
• Clean interior glass, tracks, and sills to a streak-free shine
• Wipe window coverings and blinds

KITCHEN (if installed)

• Remove protective coverings from counters and appliances
• Clean inside and outside cabinets, drawers, and appliances
• Degrease range hood, cooktop, and sink fixtures
• Wipe down all surfaces; mop floor

BATHROOMS (if installed)

• Remove construction dust from vanity, toilet, tub/shower, and fixtures
• Clean mirrors and chrome to a streak-free shine
• Detail grout, corners, and base of fixtures
• Sanitize all surfaces; sweep and mop floor

PASS 3 — DETAIL / POLISH

• Wipe all high-touch points: handles, light switches, railings, thermostat
• Dust vents, returns, and HVAC grilles; confirm filters are clean/replaced
• Clean inside closets, shelving, and storage spaces
• Check under sinks and behind appliances for dust and debris
• Remove all trash, recycling, and cleaning debris from the site
• Final sweep/mop of entrance areas and walkways
• Walk every room with a bright light to catch smudges and missed spots

PUNCH-LIST / HANDOVER CHECK

• Before-and-after photos taken of each area
• Final walkthrough completed with client or GC
• Cleaning receipts and completion notes ready to hand over
• Any touch-up cleaning completed and re-verified
